PSV luckless in losing first leg at home to Leicester

Foxes a goal to the good at break, rue chances spurned in second half

PSV Eindhoven’s hopes of reaching their first European final since 2008 look to be hanging by a thread after a 2-1 home loss to Leicester City in their UEFA Europa Conference League semi-final first leg.

Gakpo levelled after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's opener in the first half and the teams headed in level at the break. PSV thought they had turned the tie on its head when Noni Madueke fired them ahead just past the hour, however, Leicester’s resilience was rewarded with a 77th-minute equaliser from James Maddison.

With the away-goals rule no longer in effect, PSV will need to win in the second leg on Thursday 14 April to reach the final in Albania’s capital Tirana on May 25. The English side, for their part, will start the match as slight favourites after coming away from the Netherlands with a valuable draw.
