Kansas City Chiefs lose 24-14 to Jacksonville Jaguars in preseason opener

Parker Washington delivers longest return under NFL's new kickoff rules

KANSAS CITY, Mo. The Kansas City Chiefs suffered a 24-14 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in their preseason opener on Saturday night at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Chiefs were led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who played the entire first half and finished 10-of-16 for 105 yards and a touchdown. Running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire also had a strong performance, rushing for 45 yards on 10 carries.

The Jaguars were led by quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who played the entire first half and finished 11-of-18 for 108 yards. Running back Travis Etienne also had a strong performance, rushing for 54 yards on 10 carries.

The Chiefs got off to a slow start, punting on their first three possessions. The Jaguars took advantage of the Chiefs' struggles, scoring on a 1-yard touchdown run by Etienne in the first quarter and a 33-yard field goal by Riley Patterson in the second quarter.

The Chiefs finally got on the board in the second quarter when Mahomes connected with tight end Travis Kelce on a 10-yard touchdown pass. The Chiefs defense also forced a fumble by Lawrence on the Jaguars' ensuing possession, giving the Chiefs the ball back at the Jaguars' 25-yard line.

The Chiefs were unable to take advantage of the turnover, however, and punted the ball back to the Jaguars. The Jaguars then marched down the field and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run by Lawrence to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

The Chiefs defense forced another fumble by Lawrence in the third quarter, but the Chiefs offense was again unable to capitalize on the turnover. The Jaguars then added to their lead with a 37-yard field goal by Patterson in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs got a late touchdown on a 1-yard run by Edwards-Helaire, but it was too little too late. The Jaguars recovered the ensuing onside kick and ran out the clock to secure the victory.

The Chiefs will be back in action next Saturday when they travel to take on the Green Bay Packers in the second preseason game.
